Simply put, traditional skills coaching tends to focus on helping an individual to achieve goals by helping him or her learn skills and strategies that optimize performance. This style of coaching can work well for known problems and in the short term. However, in the long term the gains are not always sustainable. And it isn’t well-placed to deal with complexity and the unknown.
Developmental coaching, by contrast, goes deeper. It helps leaders grow their capacity to think, relate, and act more effectively in complex environments. Rather than focusing only on performance goals, the work addresses the underlying ways individuals interpret challenges, manage pressure, and influence others—resulting in more adaptive leadership, better decisions, and sustained impact.
